Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.
This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
