The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he admitted that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio became as messy during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.
Matteo's Surprising Presence
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set.
