Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
