One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
