In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
